Students ‘discover’ themselves and learn new vocation

August 14th, 2008

By Heba Alshareef

Toronto - Aspiring Muslim life coaches gathered this weekend for the second ever DiscoverULife certification where Muhammad Alshareef, founder of the company that aims to provide global ‘world class recurring ispiration’ to its members, is teaching the fundamentals of what it takes to become a life coach.

Participants gathered from far off places like Australia, Egypt, and the U.K., but it’s the Muslims from Ottawa, Canada, Alshareef’s hometown, that have come out in droves. “Ottawa is so not where it’s at,” joked a Toronto area attendee, “they’re aiming to dominate the Muslim life coaching market, but really, they should just focus on competing with coach Hazem Awad for a slice of the pie of people committed to change in that city. Really, how experimental is the Experimental Farm?”

The comment is made in jest as life coaches are not limited by location.  The internet and availablity of many different  long distance carriers makes the entire globe full with potential clients.
Also, the commitment and camaraderie at the downtown hotel is something rarely seen in an intense, eight day long training module. Students convene at 9:00 am sharp to study until 7:00 pm such techniques as the art of persuasion, having the ability to get to the root of a problem, and the ways in which coaches can stack, chain, and collapse anchors.

“It’s fascinating,” declared an enthusiastic student, “it’s not done yet and I already feel like the insights and knowledge I’ve gained is worth ten times the amount of money I paid to be here.”

“Yes,” chimes in another, “this is such a blessing from Allah SWT. I get shivers seeing the calibre of the people in this room. This is a talented bunch and I feel so humbled that I am amongst them! They are brothers and sisters who are sure to bring massive benefit to the masses. Shaykh Muhammad has ways of training outstanding - and I see, hear and feel OUTSTANDING in every corner of this room!”

Alshareef insists it’s an incredible journey for him as well, “the certification brings together such HIGH HIGH quality people, you never hear any complaining - you just hear the ideas and thoughts of people who are, in sha Allah, destined to be leaders. Its addictive!”

The participants will face a gruelling graduation requirement that will have them face their own limitations head on and seek out ten paying clients. It’s a “real world” task that is intended to launch their careers and have them move towards financial freedom and the fulfillment of their best destinies so that they can best serve their clients.

Rock Solid?

August 7th, 2008

Imagine this… You have passed back through the ages to the time of the Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. You have traveled on your camel for days in search of the knowledge that this one man possesses, salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.

Upon arriving at your destination, you meet a generous family who is willing to open its doors to you and provide you with food and shelter for as long as you wish to remain in the city, alhamdu lillah. When you reach their home, you are directed as to where you can allow your camel to rest during your stay. You dismount, exhausted and famished from your long journey, and begin carefully gathering rocks from the ground around you. One by one, feeling them heavier and heavier as you collect them, you stack them on top of one another in a large square until they stand as tall as you. Finally, with your camel securely within his stone wall, you enter the family’s safe haven to gain some much desired food and water.

Huh?

As strange as the ending of this story may sound, we often find ourselves doing, in essence, the very same thing in our lives. We want certainty to such a great extent that we are willing to do things that don’t even make sense in order to get it. Just as this person wanted the security of knowing that his camel would remain in the same place until his return, we want the security of knowing that our decisions and choices in life will produce the results we want.

So what do we do? We plan and plan but never act. We fill our days with tasks that don’t move us forward but keep us securely where we are now, even though that may not be where we want to be. We delay making choices, waiting for the perfect, and certain, opportunity to arise. But of course it doesn’t.

We need certainty and predictability in our lives because in its absence we are left with only chaos, but at the same time we need variety and ‘spice’ to keep our lives in motion. And that spice comes from taking steps forward when the way is not 100% certain.

One day our beloved Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it. He asked the Bedouin, “Why don’t you tie down your camel?” The Bedouin answered, “I put my trust in Allah.” The Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, then said, “Tie your camel first, then put your trust in Allah” (Tirmidhi).

We have to do our part, for ourselves, our loved ones, and for our communities. And sometimes that means not knowing completely what the outcome of our actions will be when we take them.

As we move forward, we may feel that the path in front of us is perhaps scary and unknown, but seeking Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala’s guidance and trusting in Him gives us the certainty of knowing that He will be there with us all the way.

The Lesson of the Monkey

July 30th, 2008

She had big goals, she dreamed big dreams, and she always had her long to-do list by her side so she could check each thing off as she completed it. She was taking all of the right steps and doing what she had learned to do. But even with all of that, Amina felt like she wasn’t going anywhere in her life.

Try as she did, Amina couldn’t find the missing piece of the puzzle. She was supposed to be happy by now, but she wasn’t. What was she doing wrong?

The answer came in a very unexpected way.

During her quest for knowledge and improvement in her life, Amina had read the book The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey. She had learned in this book that some things that people tried to give her to take care of really weren’t her problems and that the ‘monkeys’ that people came to her with that were not hers should go right back out the door where they came from.

She thought this was such a cool analogy that she wanted a small stuffed monkey to put where she worked to remind her of this. But wherever she searched, she just couldn’t find what she was looking for…until a few weeks later when a colleague came to work with some prizes for a children’s activity she was hosting. What was there, right in front of Amina, but the perfect monkey she had been searching for! How amazing was that!

Through this experience, Amina recognized gratefully that when you search for something in your life it will come to you, insha’Allah, perhaps in a way that you never expected. She learned the lesson, and then tucked it away in her memory to draw on later.

But the biggest lesson was yet to come.

Later on in the day as Amina explored the intricacies of her new found animal friend, she came to a startling understanding: When she had wanted a monkey, what had she done? In some kind of way she had made dua.

The magnitude of the situation weighed heavily on Amina’s shoulders as the realization of it set in. She had asked for a monkey. Only a monkey. What if she had asked for something bigger? Something that would have brought her closer to Allah and made her dreams real?

From that point forward, the little monkey took on a whole new meaning for Amina. It served it’s original purpose, but more importantly it became a constant reminder for her of the power of dua.

——–

Nothing is impossible for Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. He hears us when we talk to Him, and is ready to respond if we ask.

“Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, inquiring: ‘Who will call on Me so that I may respond to him? Who is asking something of Me so I may give it to him? Who is asking for My forgiveness so I may forgive him?’” Al-Bukhari

So when you make dua, is it going to include ‘only a monkey’, or will it contain ever so much more? When you call on Allah, what will you ask Him for today?

They Really Don’t Care About You!

July 25th, 2008

Do you know the ONE–single most essential–question that goes through a potential customer’s mind, when they’re thinking of buying something?  It’s a very simple question that most business folks ignore:

“What’s in it for me?”

Your potential customers really don’t care about you, your product, or your service.  They only care about what THEY get out of it.

They actually see your product or service as an obstacle to get to where they want to go.  Now, isn’t that interesting?

Listen to what they are REALLY saying:

“Sell me the pleasures, convenience, and profits of modern technology…
DON’T SELL ME COMPUTERS!”

“Sell me the pleasant hours of reading and relaxation for my weary mind…
DON’T SELL ME BOOKS!”

“Sell my children happy childhood moments that they will remember for a lifetime…
DON’T SELL ME TOYS!”

You get the idea.

Always focus on the benefits of your product or service.  Stop focusing on YOU.  If you’re not used to that, then it’s time to get over it.  They really don’t care about you (or your product or your service).

Instead, start focusing on THEIR needs and wants.  Only then, they’ll start caring for you because…

…because you could let go of your own ego and were brave enough to care about them first.

By the way, the same thing applies to your club, organization, association, or institution.  Just change the word “customer” with “members” (or whatever you call them) and “product/service” with whatever you offer.

Simply put: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Think about it.

Let this transfer-of-information be an exciting transformation for you.

What will YOU do?

July 24th, 2008

Dreams are not just something that you have when you close your eyes at night, or that you think about when the current conversation topic isn’t very interesting. Dreams can be something real – just ask Khafayah and Mohamed. These two DiscoverULife members not only had the courage to dream big, but experienced the phenomenal feeling of having their dreams come true.

And that’s only been during the past two days.

At DiscoverULife, success stories are becoming common place. Some of them are the small ones that mean a lot to those directly involved, while others are the gigantic, knock-your-socks-off kind.

Now for those of you who have a thread of doubt running through your mind, I assure you, I have seen these kinds of successes with my own eyes. I’ve watched people’s lives change right in front of me. I’ve felt the intensity of their emotions when they’ve found themselves in a new place in their lives with things they had only wished for at one time now appearing before them in full form.

And you can experience this, too. As soon as you’re ready.

Khafayah and Mohamed are two people who decided they didn’t just want to go with the flow of things – they wanted to ride the wave. They didn’t want to be led through life, they wanted to lead. And lead they did, with an outstanding example for all of us to follow.

And here’s more good news: in DiscoverULife great things have been accomplished by regular people, just like you. So that means that if they can have these successes, you can, too. Every day if you really want.

Right now you have a choice. You can click onto another place somewhere on the Web and think, “Gee, that was a nice post I just read,” or you can decide this minute to take a bigger step and make a difference in your own life. You can choose to become the person you’ve always wanted to be, and live the life you’ve always wanted to have, or you can go back where you came from and wonder 10 years from now what your life would have been like if you would have taken the other path. It’s all up to you.

Now it’s your turn to choose. What will YOU do?
