Build Your Own Dream Team, Or else!
Muhammad Alshareef
1989, a rule change by FIBA allowed USA basketball to field teams with professional players. 1992 Barcelona, Spain. The USA basketball team at the Olympics was basically an NBA all-star team because of this new rule change. The Dream Team, as they were nicknamed, won the Olympic basketball tournament with an average margin of victory of 43.8 points and with coach Daly never using a timeout. When mangers or entrepreneurs hire people, the do not put this metaphor in to practice. They are searching for people with the skills to do the job...but I want you to think of your applicants in a different categorization: C players, people you feel will do LESS then what you expect of them B players, people you feel will ONLY do what you expect of them A players, people who will go ABOVE and BEYOND what you expect of them If you can aim to surround yourself with A players, you will have a dream team, and you will crush your competition. Here are some tips on how to attract A players to your team: 1. YOU yourself have go to become an A leader!
Here is the problem you will face: A players are finicky and rightfully so. They are the best, and they will not submit to a loser. They will walk away from anyone less then an A player. (Recall if you will all those people who hate their bosses and quit because of them).
2. You have got to be willing to wait for an A player
When it comes time to hire someone, usually people wait to the last minute and send out an email or post an announcement somewhere. "A" players, my dear, are usually hired somewhere and are usually paid big bucks. They are not sitting around unemployed. So, you've got to be patient to win them over to your side when their contract is over, or a semester has ended, or they have completed their project. Wait for them and you will be handsomely rewarded. 3. Understand what motivates them, and it's not necessarily money
People make the mistake of thinking that if you pay enough money to an A player they will gladly work for you forever and ever. That's bogus. A players might be attracted initially by money, but soon after that they will quit or be disengaged from work. You've got to talk to them, find out what they really desire in life: a sense they are truly benefitting humanity in their job, the joy of building something truly spectacular and significant. Whatever it is, determine their motivation and keep hammering it home and make sure the job you are hiring them for fulfills that. With best wishes to see you succeed at the highest level!
